About

Tell me a bit about yourself

Hi, I’m Mairi and I am the owner of The Wee Crafty Owl. I am a wife and mum to 4 grown up children and I love reading and anything crafty.

Where did your passion for knitting begin?

I have always crafted with my Mum and Granny who were both sewers and knitters. I can remember learning to knit with my granny and her making me a knitting bag and sewing kit of my own. I think crafting is in the blood as we found a family photo from 1916 where my great great grandmother is knitting socks in the group photo!

Over the years I have enjoyed dressmaking, cross stitch, paper-craft, card making and quilting and ever since I discovered crochet, I have become totally addicted!

What led you to start up and open Wee Crafty Owl?

After working in a craft shop then a fabric shop, I decided to try my own business. I opened in April 2019 with the aim of having a shop that me, as a customer, would enjoy shopping in.

I wanted the shop to be more than a retail unit, I wanted it to be a crafting hub encouraging community, friendship and support. I feel this is the case at the Wee Crafty Owl.

What is your favourite aspect of running the Wee Crafty Owl?

Crafting is a wonderful hobby which can be enjoyed at home or in a group and you always have something in common with another crafter and can appreciate their talent. I love the shop, it is my happy place. The customers are amazing and so many have become friends. Whether knitting for babies or moving on to school jumpers I enjoy getting to know the families and seeing them grow.

What does the future hold for the Wee Crafty Owl?

I look forward to being part of their journey in the future.

My vision for the shop going forward is to be able to teach people new skills and inspire the next generation to take up these traditional crafts and would like to have more locally sourced yarns and supplies.
